Biography:
Matt is originally from Colorado. He was converted during his time at Brown University (graduated 1992). Núria is from the Barcelona area. She was converted at a young age. They met in Barcelona in December of 1995 and were married in August 1997. They lived for three years in Escondido while Matt attended Westminster Seminary and interned at GBC, and Nuria taught Spanish at The Classical Academy. The Leightons returned to Spain in 2002. They have five children: Dan, Jon, Tània, Àlex, and Marc.
Matt began teaching at the FIT-IBSTE (Evangelical Seminary of Spain) in the fall of 2007. He is Professor of New Testament and Hermeneutics, and he serves as the Dean of Students at the seminary.
Matt and Núria serve in the Eslgéisa Evangèlica de Vilassar de Mar (Evangelical Church of Vilassar de Mar). The church is located in Núria’s hometown, almost 30 minutes north of Barcelona. Matt is an elder with responsibilities that include the oversight of the teaching ministries in the church. Núria is active in the Sunday school program and in music.
Matt also teaches a few classes in a distance-learning program called El Colegio Bíblico de la Gracia (Grace Bible College).
Matt is due to finish his PhD in New Testament Studies through the Universidad de Salamanca in 2014. His project has to do with the theology of covenant in Paul’s writings.
