Are You Ready to Die?

Text: Luke 16:19-31

A few months ago I preached a series on heaven.  Some would suggest that we should also teach what Scripture says about the afterlife for those who do not know Christ.  Some have pointed that Jesus spoke more about the topic of hell than heaven.  This week I plan to preach from the parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus from Luke 16.

Hell is an extremely unpopular subject.  Liberal church leaders no longer believe in hell. Even evangelical Christians who affirm the biblical teaching about eternal punishment rarely speak about it.  One seminary president states, “You can traverse the entire US on any given Sunday morning and you will not hear a sermon on the judgment of God or eternal punishment.”  If he were to come to GBC this Sunday, he would hear such a sermon.

Because everything in the Bible is both infallible and profitable (2 Tim. 3:16-17), we should not be hesitant to proclaim all that God has revealed.  There are many benefits to studying this passage.  It is a reminder of the folly of living only for the things of this fleeting world. It also causes us to appreciate the price paid by Jesus so that we would escape God’s wrath. Finally, it should motivate us to warn those who remain under God’s wrath because of their sin.

Please read Luke 16:19-31 in preparation for listening to this sermon.
