Wives Defending Marriage

We will complete our series on defending marriage as we consider the roles of wives in defending marriage.  The breakdown of a biblical view of the family did not begin with the legalization of homosexual marriage.  Rather the rejection of other biblical principles concerning God’s design for marriage inevitably led to the redefinition of marriage.

One key area which not only the world, but large sections of the church abandoned a generation ago is God’s design for men and women to have different roles in both the family and in the church.  Even many evangelicals have rejected the biblical teaching that men and women have complementary roles and have embraced our culture’s view that men and women are essentially the same in the home and in the church.  I believe that this paved the way for our current situation.  If we are all the same, then any two of the same thing can form a marriage.

On the other hand, Scripture teaches that God created us “male and female” (Gen. 1:27) with different  roles (1 Cor. 11:9).  Marriage, therefore, requires one of each gender and cannot take place between two of the same.

How I thank God for the ladies in our church who embrace their complementary role in the home and in the church.  By so doing they are defending God’s design for marriage and functioning as salt and light in the world.  In this sermon we will consider what Scripture has to say about the helping (Gen. 2:18) role of wives in marriage and how they are spiritually equal to their husbands while still choosing to follow their husbands’ leadership.

Please read Ephesians 5:22-24, 1 Peter 3:1-7 and 1 Corinthians 11:1-12 before listening to this sermon.
