God’s Misunderstood Prophet

God speaks to people in various ways including creation and conscience.  He speaks most powerfully through His revealed Word which He gave to us through prophets and is recorded in Scripture.

John the Baptist was the prophet who bridged the gap between the Old Testament prophets and the Messiah to Whom they pointed.  Jesus declares that “among those born of women there is no one greater than John” (Luke 7:28a).  In what sense is John greater than those who preceded him?  Jesus also says “he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he (John)”.  In what sense are Jesus’ apostles (and we) greater than John?

God declares that His people must listen to His prophets (Deuteronomy 18:18ff) and those who don’t will face judgment.  Some responded to John’s teaching by repenting, but most failed to submit to John’s (and Jesus’) message.
