The New is Better

Text: Luke 5:33-39
Speaker: Jim Newheiser
Outline: PDF
Date: June 22, 2014

We tend to be comfortable with that which is old and familiar.  While this might be allowable when it comes to old shoes or sweaters, it does not apply to the old ways of the Pharisees.  Jesus comes bringing a new way.  He offers a new way of forgiveness, he enters into new relationships (with “sinners”) and invites His people to a new life.  The Scribes and the Pharisees oppose Jesus at every turn.  They object when Jesus and His disciples don’t follow their traditions.  Jesus explains that He is inaugurating a radically new age which is incompatible with the old.

Elders Serving Together

Text: 1 Peter 5:1-4
Speaker: Jim Newheiser
Outline: PDF
Date: June 15, 2014

Tomorrow will be a special day for our congregation.  Yes, it is Father’s Day.  But also we are recognizing Tom Maxham as Elder, joining our other six Elders in the work of shepherding Christ’s local flock.  How can a church have seven Pastors without one man in charge?  How can several men work together in spite of differences of opinion and personality (some of us for over 20 years)?  Does the Bible teach a particular form of church government?  If we are right that independent local churches should be led by a plurality of men who function as equals, how could so many churches and traditions be wrong?

In this sermon I will seek to answer these questions from Scripture.  I’ll also try to make some applications to fathers who are called to lead/shepherd their little flocks.

Please read 1 Peter 5:1-4 and 1 Timothy 3:1-7 in preparation for listening to this sermon.

The Call to Continue

Text: Acts 20:17-38
Speaker: Craig Marshall
Date: June 1, 2014

I don’t like goodbyes, but they are a part of this life and a common experience at Grace Bible Church.  One of the benefits of saying goodbye is that it helps you to step back and think about what is most important in life.  In this passage we look at the Apostle Paul’s farewell to the Ephesian Elders and are challenged and encouraged by his call to continue in a word-centered Christian life.

As you read over Acts 20:17-38, spend some time thinking about what the Apostle Paul viewed as most important and the implications that has for us individually and as a church.
