Glorious Unity Through Christlikeness

Text: Romans 15:1-13
Speaker: Jim Newheiser
Outline: PDF
Date: August 25, 2013

This Sunday I will be preaching from Romans 15:1-13 in which Paul encourages us to serve and accept each other, following the example of Christ who has done this for us.  He prays that we would unite to the glory of God.

This was a challenge in the early church because of the differences which existed, especially over matters of the Jewish Law (see Romans 14).  Other non-gospel issues threaten the unity of churches today, including GBC.

As you prepare for worship on Sunday read Romans 15:1-13 and think about these questions.

  • What non-gospel issues might threaten our unity?
  • How can we imitate Christ by bearing with the weaknesses of others?
  • Whom should we welcome as members of Grace Bible Church?
  • How should our acceptance of one another in all relationships resemble Christ’s acceptance of us?
  • What is the ultimate goal of our service and unity?
  • How should we be praying about these things?

The LORD is My Shepherd

Text: Psalm 23
Speaker: Jim Newheiser
Outline: PDF
Date: August 18, 2013

This week we will look at the best known and loved of all of the Psalms.  The LORD is portrayed as the Shepherd of His people who provides for, guides and protects His sheep.  This is a great follow-up to our study of Jesus as the Good Shepherd in John 10.

This familiar Psalm is sometimes misunderstood.  As you read over (or memorize) the Psalm you might ask yourself the following questions:

  1. How might this Psalm relate to the preceding and following Psalms (22 and 24)?
  2. How does this Psalm speak to those who are not believers? (John 10:26)?
  3. Does being the LORD’s sheep mean that you will have an easy carefree life?

The Blessed Security of the Lord’s Sheep

Text: John 10:19-42
Speaker: Jim Newheiser
Outline: PDF
Date: August 11, 2013

Is it possible for someone to lose his or her salvation?  Many of us have known people who professed faith in Christ and then denied Christ.  You may have known others who claim to be converted but their lives have never changed.  They might even claim to have Jesus as Savior, but not as Lord of their lives.

John 10:27-29 is the classic text in Scripture teaching the perseverance of the saints.  Jesus’ sheep hear His voice and follow Him.  He gives them eternal life and no-one can snatch them away from Him.  Some have said that the perseverance of the saints (sheep) is because of the perseverance of the Savior (Shepherd).
