The Gospel According to Noah

Text: Genesis 6:5-22, 1 Peter 3:18-20
Speaker: Josh Henson
Date: August 26, 2012

Have you ever wanted a “do-over?”  Some life situations seem like only a “restart” button could remedy them.  With God’s help tomorrow we will be looking at a very similar situation in the life of Noah.  The world had become so corrupt that a fresh start was needed.  Did it solve the problem that the people thought it would?  We’ll consider the answer to that and many other questions tomorrow as we look at Genesis 6:5-22. Feel free to read the text ahead of time and do come with ready hearts to receive God’s Word.

Cursing or Blessing

Text: Galatians 3:10-14
Speaker: Jim Newheiser

I continue to be astounded at how each new section in Galatians presents the gospel in a fresh way. I didn’t think it could get any better than 2:16,20 and 3:6; but I think that this passage will be one of my favorites for the rest of my life.

In the previous passage Paul had shown that as Abraham was justified by faith alone, so God has always saved by faith alone. Believing Gentiles are children of Abraham who are heirs of his blessing from God.

In this week’s passage Paul contrasts the only two possible ways by which people seek to be justified by God. One must choose between faith and works. It is impossible to combine the two. Those who rely upon their works will be under God’s curse. Those who approach God by faith are blessed because Christ our substitute took the curse for our sin.

Again Paul quotes from the Old Testament (several times) Deut. 27:26 21:23 Lev. 18:5 Hab. 2:4. I would encourage you to read Galatians 3 and to read the Old Testament texts from which Paul quotes in their context.

Sons of Abraham

Text: Galatians 3:6-9

Galatians 3:6-9

Even so Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness. Therefore, be sure that it is those who are of faith who are sons of Abraham. The Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “ All the nations will be blessed in you.” So then those who are of faith are blessed with Abraham, the believer.
