Grace When Things Are Hard

Text: James 1:2-18
Speaker: Jim Newheiser
Outline: PDF
Date: July 22, 2012

Because so many of us have been going through significant challenges with health, family, and other issues, one of my fellow elders suggested that I preach about facing our trials in faith.

Tomorrow I will be giving an overview of James 1:2-18 (which had been covered in several sermons early last year). You will face trials, but you can be comforted that God is at work in your hard circumstances. It is crucial that you seek God’s wisdom so that you will benefit from your trials. Finally, it is important that you never lose sight of God’s goodness.

O Foolish Galatians

Galatians 3:1-5

You foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified? This is the only thing I want to find out from you: did you receive the Spirit by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith? Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? Did you suffer so many things in vain— if indeed it was in vain? So then, does He who provides you with the Spirit and works miracles among you, do it by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith?

Crucified with Christ

Text: Galatians 2:17-21
Speaker: Jim Newheiser
Outline: PDF
Date: July 8, 2012

This Sunday’s passage is contains some of the most difficult verses in Galatians (2: 17-18) and some of the most famous (2: 20-21).
While some of the details are challenging, the main message is clear.
We are done with seeking to justify ourselves by the law. Now we trust solely in Christ who gave Himself up unto death for us.
If our obedience to law has anything to do with our justification then Christ died in vain and salvation is no longer of grace.

One wonderful feature of this passage is that Paul describes our new status as being done with the law and alive to God in light of our union with Christ.
These concepts are introduced in Galatians and further developed in the book of Romans (especially chapters 6-7).
