Tomorrow we will finish the first chapter of James.
James has been following a progression of thought.
First, he told us about how we have been regenerated by God’s Word (v. 18).
Then, he told us to be receptive to that Word which has been implanted with our souls (v. 21).
Then he told us to be doers of the Word, not merely hearers (v. 22-25).
He ends the chapter by telling us specific things we are to do in applying the Word – bridling the tongue, not being stained by the world, and caring for the helpless (widows and orphans).

James’ approach is instructive concerning how Christians view good works (and how our good works differ from those done by people of other religions).
The foundation of what we do for God (i.e. helping widows) is what God has already done for us through the Gospel Word (giving us a new birth and implanting His Word within us).
