Many people come to church for an experience (typically in worship) or for education (to learn from the sermon). It is certainly appropriate to experience strong emotions as we worship God together, and to gain in knowledge of the truth as the Word is proclaimed. But the church is much more than what we get out of the Sunday services. God has made us a community, a body, and a family.

In this week’s text Paul reminds us that we are called upon to be fervent in our loving service to one another, to identify and meet one another’s needs, and to open our homes and our lives to one another.

All of this is both necessary and possible because of Christ Who, in love, served us, met our greatest need through the gift of Himself, and welcomes us into the family of God.
